Meaning
Vる/Vない+ことだ gives advice — "the best thing is to do / not to do" — from someone with experience: an elder, a doctor, a mentor. It sounds confident and general, often after a condition like "if you want to…".
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Advice from a senior to a junior, a doctor to a patient, an author to readers: Especially after a goal condition:
- Where not to use it
- Not used toward superiors (it sounds preachy) and not for your own decisions — that is ことにする. It does not express moral duty (べきだ) or a general social norm (ものだ).

Important notes
- ことだ advises a specific listener in their situation; ものだ is a norm for everyone, べきだ is duty, ほうがいい is a neutral recommendation.
- Non-past only: "should have" cannot be said with ことだ (✗寝たことだ); use べきだった or ばよかった.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 毎日話したことだ → ✓ 毎日話すことだ — this advice pattern takes only the non-past form.
- ✗ 部長、早く休むことです → ✓ 部長、早めにお休みになったほうがいいですよ — ことだ sounds preachy; you don't advise your boss this way.
