Meaning
Vたとたん(に) means 'the instant A happened, B happened' — unexpectedly. There is no gap between A and B, and B happens on its own, often to the speaker's surprise. It narrates something that already happened; it is not a plan like 'I'll do it right after'.
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For a sudden, unexpected change or reaction right after something:
- Where not to use it
- The second clause cannot be an intention, request, invitation or your own planned action (✗家に着いたとたん、電話します). Only the た form goes before とたん — not the dictionary form or the て form.

Important notes

- It can be written in kanji as 途端. There is also the standalone そのとたん, 'at that very moment', which refers back to the previous sentence.
- てすぐ is neutral “immediately after,” including plans or decisions; とたん presents B as a sudden event or reaction, rather than an intention, request or invitation.
Common mistakes

— you need a change (~になった), not a state.
