Meaning
The speaker says a feeling or sensation is so strong it is hard to bear: 暑くてたまらない 'the heat is unbearable', 会いたくてしょうがない 'I'm dying to see them'. It reports the speaker's own state; it is not an objective judgment about a thing and does not mean 'too much' (すぎる).
Formation
- Vて+たまらない/しょうがない/しかたがない: 気になる → 気になってしょうがない
- Vたい → Vたくて+…: 会いたい → 会いたくてたまらない
- i-adj: Aい → Aくて+…: 暑い → 暑くてたまらない
- na-adj: Aな → Aで+…: 心配だ → 心配でしかたがない

When to use it
- Where to use it
- With verbs and adjectives of emotion, desire and physical sensation: 眠くてたまらない, 不安でしょうがない, 腹が立ってしかたがない. しょうがない is the most colloquial, しかたがない slightly more restrained, and たまらない the strongest and the usual choice for bodily sensations.
- Where not to use it
- Not merely an objective measure: この部屋は広い does not express a feeling. 広くてたまらない needs a strong personal reaction to the space. Another person’s inner state is normally qualified with ようだ / らしい when inferred; direct statements are possible in narration or with established knowledge.

Important notes
- For an inferred feeling: 弟は欲しくてしょうがないようだ. Narration, quotation or established knowledge can allow omission of ようだ; this concerns viewpoint, not a ban on third-person subjects.
- Don't confuse it with ~てもしょうがない 'it's no use': 気にしてもしょうがない means 'there's no point worrying', not 'I'm terribly worried'.
- とても is a neutral “very”; てたまらない adds “so much that I cannot bear it”.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 面接が心配くてたまらない → ✓ 面接が心配でたまらない — 心配 is a na-adjective, so it takes the で form before たまらない.
- △ 彼は寂しくてたまらない。 — possible in narration. If you are only inferring from his behavior, 彼は寂しくてたまらないようだ is more precise.
- ✗ ケーキを食べてたまらなかった。 → ✓ ケーキを食べすぎた。 — 'too much' is すぎる; てたまらない describes a feeling that is hard to bear, not an excessive action.

Similar grammar
