Meaning
A feeling or thought arises by itself and won't go away: 気がしてならない 'I can't shake the feeling', 残念でならない 'it is deeply regrettable'. It sounds literary and is used in writing, speeches and the news. With は (てはならない) it becomes a prohibition.
Formation
- Spontaneous-perception verbs:
When to use it
- Where to use it
- In written and formal language about feelings that won't let go: Common in interviews, speeches, essays and letters.
- Where not to use it
- Not for actions you can't refrain from (that's ずにはいられない), and not for everyday complaints like 'it's unbearably hot', where てたまらない is more natural. Without は it is not a prohibition; 'must not' is てはならない.
