Meaning
“Even if we grant A, B will still hold.” The speaker provisionally accepts A as a premise, while the second clause rejects the expected conclusion. A is usually hypothetical, but a stated or known fact can also be granted for the sake of argument. Often used with たとえ or 仮に.
Formation
- V普通形+としても: 行く → 行くとしても; 失敗した → 失敗したとしても; 降らない → 降らないとしても
- Aい+としても: 高い → 高いとしても
- Aな+だ+としても: 不便だ → 不便だとしても (not 不便なとしても)
- N+だ+としても: 冗談だ → 冗談だとしても
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When you allow for an unfavorable or unlikely possibility and say your decision won't change: たとえ失敗したとしても, 値段が高いとしても買う. Typical in talk about decisions, positions and judgments.
- Where not to use it
- Not a substitute for neutrally reporting two facts: “it was raining, but I went out” normally uses 雨が降っていたけど、出かけた. としても frames A as a supposition or a provisionally accepted argument. For “if A, then B” without concession, use としたら.

Important notes
- Unlike plain ても, it stresses the supposition and attaches to the plain form, so it easily handles the past: 宝くじが当たったとしても "even if I had won the lottery".
- たとえ or 仮に at the start makes the supposition even stronger: たとえ反対されたとしても.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 雨が降ってとしても、出かけます。 → ✓ 雨が降るとしても/雨が降っても、出かけます。 — としても attaches to the plain form; with the て-form use plain ても.
- ✗ 交通が不便なとしても… → ✓ 交通が不便だとしても… — na-adjectives and nouns take だ before と.
- △ 雨が降っているとしても、出かけます。 — possible as “even granting that it is raining, I will go out.” For a straightforward report of the visible rain, 雨が降っているけど、出かけます is more natural.
