JLPT N3 · Time and reason

~としたら・~とすれば・~とすると

Supposing that…; if we assume…

Meaning

Introduces a supposition: "suppose A", "if we assume A". It works for imaginary scenarios and for conclusions drawn from what you have heard: "if that's so, then…". Unlike たら, it does not describe a real sequence of events.

Formation

  1. V普通形+としたら/とすれば/とすると: 行く → 行くとしたら; 行かない → 行かないとすれば; 行った → 行ったとすると
  2. Aい+としたら: 正しい → 正しいとすれば; 高くない → 高くないとしたら
  3. Aな+だ+としたら: 楽だ → 楽だとすれば (not 楽なとしたら)
  4. N+だ+としたら: 雨だ → 雨だとすると; 本当だ → 本当だとしたら

When to use it

Where to use it
In speculation and daydreaming (もし生まれ変わるとしたら) and when drawing conclusions from someone's words or from data (その話が本当だとしたら…, この計算が正しいとすれば…). Often paired with もし or 仮に.
Where not to use it
Not for planned or certain events: ✗駅に着くとしたら電話して — use たら. Not for "even if" — that is としても.

Important notes

  • としたら is the most conversational and flexible form: a wish, question or invitation can follow it. とすれば and とすると sound more logical and dry and are usually followed by a conclusion, judgment or question rather than a request.
  • Don't confuse it with volitional + としたら: 出かけようとしたら、雨が降ってきた "just as I was about to go out, it started to rain" — a real past event, not a supposition.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ 駅に着くとしたら、電話してください。 → ✓ 駅に着いたら、電話してください。 — you will definitely reach the station; this is a sequence, not a supposition, so use たら.
  • ✗ その話が本当なとしたら… → ✓ その話が本当だとしたら… — と follows the plain form; nouns and na-adjectives take だ, not な.
  • ✗ もし彼が犯人だとしても、すぐ警察に知らせよう。 → ✓ もし彼が犯人だとしたら、すぐ警察に知らせよう。 — としても means "even if", but here the second half follows from the supposition.
