Meaning
A formal 'with' in three meanings: 1) together with someone or something (= といっしょに); 2) at the same time as an event; 3) as A changes, B changes too (like につれて).
Formation
- N+とともに (together with): 家族 → 家族とともに
- N+とともに (at the same time as): 合図 → 合図とともに
- Vる+とともに (at the same time, as well as): 発表する → 発表するとともに
- N/Vる (change)+とともに: 年齢 → 年齢とともに; 下がる → 気温が下がるとともに
- Aい/Aなである+とともに (formal 'and at the same time'): うれしい → うれしいとともに; 大変だ → 大変であるとともに
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Speeches, news, official writing: 仲間とともに喜ぶ 'celebrate with one's colleagues', 合図とともに走り出す 'start running at the signal', 年齢とともに体力が落ちる 'stamina declines with age'.
- Where not to use it
- For everyday joint activities it sounds ceremonial: going to a film with a friend is 友達といっしょに. In the ‘at the moment of an event’ sense it marks momentary events (合図とともに). States can be linked in the separate ‘and at the same time / as well as’ sense: うれしいとともに、責任も感じる.

Important notes
- The word before とともに shows the meaning: a person or thing → 'together with'; a signal or moment → 'at the same time as'; a word of change (年齢, 時代, 成長) → 'as'.
- After a verb it often means 'and at the same time, and also': 新製品を発表するとともに、値段も下げた.
- と同時に stresses the exact moment ('the very instant') or 'but at the same time'; it can't mean 'together with someone' or 'as…changes'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 友達とともにラーメンを食べに行こうよ → ✓ 友達といっしょに — とともに is formal; in a chat with a friend it sounds like a speech at a ceremony.
- ✗ 家族のとともに → ✓ 家族とともに — とともに attaches to the noun directly, without の.
- ✗ 年をとったとともに → ✓ 年をとるとともに — only the dictionary form goes before とともに.
