Meaning
'As…': A changes gradually and B naturally changes along with it. Both parts are processes of change; the second part can't be an intention, request or invitation.
Formation
- Vる+につれて: 進む → 進むにつれて
- Aい → Aくなる+につれて: 短い → 短くなるにつれて
- Aな → Aになる+につれて: 便利 → 便利になるにつれて
- N (a noun of change)+につれて: 成長 → 子どもの成長につれて
- Written variant without て: につれ: 進歩 → 技術の進歩につれ
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For natural processes — age, time, weather, growth, development: 年をとるにつれて 'as one gets older', 時間がたつにつれて 'as time goes by'.
- Where not to use it
- Not for a one-off event (✗ 卒業するにつれて) and not with a volitional second part (✗ 暖かくなるにつれて、散歩しよう). Not after the past tense or ている.

Important notes
- The second part usually contains a change expression: Vてくる/Vていく, Aくなる, ようになる, 増える, 変わる.
- A noun before につれて must itself mean a change: 成長, 変化, 進歩; ✗ 子どもにつれて.
- について means 'about' (a topic); it sounds similar but expresses no change.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 大学を卒業するにつれて、東京に引っ越した → ✓ 大学を卒業してから、東京に引っ越した — につれて needs a gradual process, not a one-off event.
- ✗ 暗くなるにつれて、電気をつけてください → ✓ 暗くなったら、電気をつけてください — a request or intention can't follow につれて.
- ✗ 年をとったにつれて → ✓ 年をとるにつれて — only the dictionary form goes before につれて.

- ~ば~ほどば〜ほど means 'the more…, the more…' with the word repeated; it can describe a rule with no process over time (軽ければ軽いほどいい).
