Meaning
~途中で means 'on the way (somewhere), before arriving' or 'in the middle of an activity that isn't finished': 帰る途中で 'on the way home', 会議の途中で 'partway through the meeting'. 途中に usually says what is located along the way: 駅に行く途中にパン屋がある.
Formation
- Vる+途中で: 帰る → 帰る途中で (on the way home)
- Vている+途中で: 話す → 話している途中で (in the middle of talking)
- Nの+途中で: 会議 → 会議の途中で, 旅行 → 旅行の途中で
- ~途中に+ある/いる (what is along the way) — 行く → 駅へ行く途中にコンビニがある
- ~途中の+N — 行く → 行く途中の電車で; on its own: 途中で(やめる), 途中まで
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For something that happens on the way or in the middle of an activity: 学校へ行く途中で友達に会った, 映画の途中で寝てしまった, 話の途中で電話が鳴った. 途中に says where something is along the route: 家に帰る途中に公園がある.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: 途中 takes the dictionary form or the ている-form, not the た-form (✗帰った途中で); nouns attach with の; with ある 'be located' you need に, not で. Otherwise the split is a tendency: 途中で for events and actions, 途中に for location; with 寄る 'drop in on the way' both occur. Meaning: if the point is being interrupted at the height of something, 最中に is the usual choice.
