Where not to use it
Not for word-for-word quotes — use 「…」と言う. Not for reporting a plain statement ("he said he'd come") — use plain form + と言う; ように is only for "do / don't do".

Important notes

  • In this use only the non-past form goes before ように: Vる or Vない.
  • In letters and notices ように is often shortened to よう, without に: 遅れないよう注意してください.
  • ために expresses purpose; the content of a request with 言う/頼む/伝える is marked only with ように.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ 先生は私にレポートを提出すると言った (meaning "told me to hand it in") → ✓ 提出するように言った — と言う reports a statement ("said he/I would hand it in"), not an instruction.
  • ✗ 医者にタバコを吸わなかったように言われた → ✓ 吸わないように言われた — only Vる/Vない can come before ように here.
  • ✗ 母に牛乳を買ってくるように頼んだ (meaning "Mom asked me") → ✓ 頼まれた — you received the request, so use the passive.
