Meaning
Adds a second fact to a first one: "not only A, but also B". Neutral in tone and fine in speech and writing; the second half usually takes も. Unlike だけ, it widens the scope rather than limiting it.
Formation
- Variants: だけではなく (a little firmer), だけじゃなくて (casual); the second half normally has 〜も: 英語だけでなく、中国語も
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Whenever a second fact of the same kind is added to the first: 安いだけでなく、量も多い (cheap, and generous portions too); 子どもだけでなく、大人も楽しめる.
- Where not to use it
- Not for limiting ("only") — that is だけ or しか〜ない. Not for contrast: if the second fact goes against the first, use けど or のに.

- With a negative second half it means "not only not A, but not B either": 野菜だけじゃなくて、魚も食べない.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 英語だけ、中国語も話せます → ✓ 英語だけでなく、中国語も話せます — だけ means "only" and clashes with も; the negation でなく is needed.
- ✗ 丁寧だだけでなく → ✓ 丁寧なだけでなく — a な-adjective takes な before だけ, never だ.
- ✗ 英語だけでなく、中国語は話せます → ✓ 英語だけでなく、中国語も話せます — the pattern adds, so the second item takes も, not contrastive は.
