Important notes
- しかたがない is often written 仕方がない; in speech が drops: しかたない. The equivalent casual しょうがない comes from しようがない, not from dropping が in しかたがない.
- Meaning 1 often comes with 今さら, いくら or 何を: 何を言ってもむだだ — 'whatever you say, it's useless'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 心配するてもしかたがない → ✓ 心配してもしかたがない — も attaches to the て-form.
- ✗ 下手なでもしかたがない → ✓ 下手でもしかたがない — な-adjectives and nouns take でも, without な.
- △ 今さら後悔してしかたがない (meaning 'there's no point regretting it now') → ✓ 今さら後悔してもしかたがない — without も it means 'I regret it terribly and can't stop'.
