JLPT N3 · Particles: roles and direction

~について・~についての

About, concerning: the topic of talk, thought or writing

Meaning

Names the topic: what people talk, think, write or ask about, or what they study. Before a noun it becomes についての. It is neutral and works in speech and in writing; it doesn't mean 'toward someone' (に対して) or 'for someone' (にとって).

Formation

  1. N+について: 将来 → 将来について話す
  2. N+についての+N: 日本の祭り → 日本の祭りについてのレポート
  3. N+について+は/も: 料金 → 料金については後で説明します
  4. Vる+こと+について: 仕事を辞める → 仕事を辞めることについて考える
  5. Question+か+について: どこに住む → どこに住むかについて相談する

When to use it

Where to use it
Whenever you name the subject of talk, thought, writing or research: 将来について話す, 町の歴史について調べる, 制度についての質問. Fine in conversation and in writing.
Where not to use it
Grammar: it doesn't attach directly to a verb (add こと or か), and it doesn't express an attitude toward a person (先生に対して失礼だ) or a viewpoint (私にとって大切だ). Style: formal documents often prefer に関して/に関する or the polite につきまして, but について is not wrong there.

  • Written につき can mean something else entirely: 'per' (一人につき500円) or 'due to' (工事中につき) — not a topic of talk.

  • △ 先生について失礼なことを言った。 (meant 'was rude to the teacher') → 先生に対して失礼なことを言った。 — with について it means you said something rude about the teacher (maybe behind their back); rudeness aimed at the person is に対して.
